SALOPIA Development Group Proposal ~ May 2009.
The purpose of this proposal is to gain the support of the Clubs, through the Committee, to an on-going commitment to develop the athletes across the County through a series activity days and mentoring programmes. Initially over a 12 month trial period but with the aim to maintain an on-going develop of the County’s potential.
It is important to recognise that the last 30 months have been a “holding position” waiting for the appointment of a full time County Coach. This approach is not sustainable and is reaching a tipping point where the goodwill of individual volunteers and the commitment of individual swimmers are running low. It is essential that the County make a step change to support the development of the County squad.
The target: To improve both individual and team performance at inter-county galas.
The method: By using a mentoring system with a high profile ex-swimmer ( Nick Gillingham ) utilising a combination of pool and land training (including stretching and land warm ups) supported by discussion on diet and hydration, goal setting and targets and race strategy.
Selection Criteria for Shropshire Development Squad
- All swimmers must have a Shropshire club as their first named club and have been eligible to swim in the Shropshire Count Championships.
- All swimmers must commit to attending all training sessions, galas selected for and keep their training log up to date, failure to do so will jeopardise their place on the squad.
- The squad will comprise 50 swimmers age 10-15 and 10 swimmers age 16-17.
- Swimmers will be selected on short course times. 10 yr old on 50`s age at 1st July, 11-15 yr olds on 100`s and age at 1st July. 16-17 yr old on team selection for Sheffield intercounty gala.
- Selection will be based on top swimmers per age group for each event. Additional selections will be based on position in rankings (top 3) in multiple events and at the discretion of the Development team.

Initial squad selected for Leicester and Sheffield galas - to develop the team.

Lombardian Trophy Gala (warm up for Sheffield).
